Featured Student

Our students are the future of dog training and the heart of our school.

That’s why we regularly take a moment to recognize one of our top aspiring trainers here.

Our Featured Student this month is Cheryl Cornett of Bradford, New Hampshire. At the time of this posting, Cheryl is studying Phase 4 of the Master Class, and she’s doing an excellent job with her studies.

My Favorite Recent Study Topics:

I’d be hard-pressed to pick a favorite topic of study so far- each phase has been engaging and interesting. But, the phase on behavior and body language was truly captivating. I was intrigued, amazed, and downright fascinated to learn dogs speak volumes with their bodies. Are the ears pricked forward or back? Is the commissure puckered or relaxed? Is the tail held high or neutral? A whole new world opened up to me after this phase.

My Favorite Recent Hands-On Activity:

This led directly into my favorite ‘hands-on’ activity: observing dogs at play and then attempting to decipher what the dogs were ‘saying’ to each other. I just couldn’t get enough- I visited doggy daycares, watched YouTube videos, and really, really observed dogs in a variety of different settings and situations. I felt as though I was learning a new language, (and I was!) but this one had lightening fast subject-verb agreement, subtle punctuation marks, and a myriad of nouns not easily translated into our verbal English. I’ve become somewhat addicted- watching dogs at Barn Hunts, on walks, in the vet’s office, during obedience classes, and wherever else dogs can be found.

How My Studies Have Changed the Way I See Dogs:

Due to what I’ve learned at CATCH Academy, I have a better understanding of why my dogs do what they do. I’ve become a kinder, gentler, more benevolent leader. I’ve always enjoyed training, but now I laugh more and stress less. I’m more confident of my abilities. I know that consistency, patience, and methodical training work. Best of all, my dogs regard training as play.

What I’m Most Excited About:

I did a great deal of research before choosing CATCH Canine Trainers Academy, and it has paid off. Their curriculum has far surpassed all my expectations. I am not only challenged by the rigor, but also empowered by the scientific principles, which explain why behavior happens. Kelly, my personal program director responds rapidly to any query I raise. I look forward to our phone conferences, as I find them inspiring, leaving me wanting to learn more. I believe CATCH will provide me with a depth of knowledge about our canine companions that will ultimately make me a professional dog trainer of the highest caliber; one who is able to successfully train dogs (and their humans) with kindness, compassion, and humor and also explain why what I’m doing works. I’m passionate about dogs and what I’m learning. I couldn’t be happier. Thank you for helping me attain a dream of mine.

Way to go, Cheryl, we’re so proud of you!
