Featured Student

Our students are the future of dog training and the heart of our school.

That’s why we regularly take a moment to recognize one of our top aspiring trainers here.

Our Featured Student this month is James Demerath of Green Bay, Wisconsin. At the time of this posting, James has just graduated the Master Class as a CATCH Certified Dog Trainer (CCDT)! Congratulations!

A Word from James

Success! Here, James is working with Maggie (depicted right) and helper dog, Jake (left).

My Favorite Recent Study Topics:

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the entire program, I would have to say that Phase 1 – All about puppies and the Critical Period, Phase 2 – Understanding Behavior, Body Language, and Vocalizations, and Phase 3 – How Dogs Think and Learn were probably top on my list.

My Favorite Recent Hands-On Activity:

Again, there are so many to choose from, but I would have to pick Becoming Aware of How Body Language Affects Dogs.

How My Studies Have Changed the Way I See Dogs:

Wow, there is no doubt that this program has affected how I look at dogs and the people they are with. I find myself always evaluating the dog(s) behavior and mannerisms (are they comfortable and confident?) and how behavior could be trained or changed based on what I see. How could I help make the dog more relaxed and happy? Also, when I see a dog or puppy that is really happy, well-behaved, calm and confident, I make sure I compliment the person on the other end of the leash on a job well done!

James owns Baird Creek Canine Connection, a dog training business that strives to “[teach] skills that promote a positive relationship between you and your dog.”

What I’m Most Excited About:

I want to thank CATCH and all of the people that make this program function day to day! During this past year, I don’t feel that any of you have dropped the ball and left me feeling like a small fish in a big pond. A special thank you to Sarah Crothers as well who worked with me throughout this achievement. Sarah, who is very knowledgeable, has been patient, responsive, and VERY helpful to me. THANK YOU SO MUCH SARAH!! I cannot fail to mention Silvia Golz, my mentor throughout this process as well. Silvia has been great to work with and her approach to the mentoring program has been nothing but professional and helpful. Silvia’s knowledge, accommodations, attention-to-detail and making sure I completed the evaluations properly was very much appreciated. Wonderful person, mentor and trainer! I had choices as to where I pursued my CPDT. I could not be happier with having chosen CATCH Canine Trainers Academy! I look forward to continuing my relationship with CATCH as I move forward for years to come.

Way to go, James, we’re so proud of you!
